"Behind every word is a whole world"

Words carry weight. In medicine, they can heal, harm, or hold entire histories. A diagnosis, a label, or even a passing comment can open up a whole world of meaning, emotion, and experience. Write a short narrative, reflection, poem, or vignette that explores a moment in which language revealed, either or concealed, a deeper world. Consider:

A word or phrase that stayed with you from a patient, colleague, or loved one.
The unspoken meanings behind medical terminology or documentation.
How translation, silence, or misunderstanding changed the course of care.
The worlds that live behind words like “stable,” “terminal,” “relapse,” or “resilient.”

Our mission is to disseminate the work of trainees as well as our beloved faculty. It is our goal to continually incorporate humanism into our work every day and reflect on our experiences — beautiful, meaningful, difficult, sad, and everything in between — as we care for our patients.
